Welcome to Music Makers!
Music Makers began several years ago for Moms and their
preschoolers to get together in a more casual class environment and explore the
joy of music, rhyme, singing, dancing, and stories. Our little program is
unique in that it costs nothing to participate and everyone takes turns leading
the activities, bringing snacks, and cleaning up. It’s been very successful and
everybody gives lots of help to keep the class going.
There are 4 parts to a Music Makers class: Welcome, Singing
Time, Marching Time, and Story Time. We begin in the primary room at 10:00 and do the Welcome and Singing
Time. Then, we move to the social hall for Marching Time, and we go back to the
primary room for Story Time. We are usually finished around 11:00. We have the class on Wednesday
mornings from September to May (but not during Thanksgiving week, winter break,
or spring break). Everyone is encouraged to bring their own puppet (for the La-La song), instrument (for Marching Time), and a spill-proof drink (for snack time) each
week.

Signing Up
Music Makers is fun! We can all contribute in a simple way
to make this program great. Anyone can participate, and anyone can sign up. No
experience required. We hope that everyone will feel comfortable trying to lead
the activities. We don’t expect professional teaching. Remember, the kids don’t
care if you have the songs memorized, can stay in tune, or if you know how to
dance. They just want to sing and play and have a good time. Also, there are
many different ways to contribute to Music Makers.
As a general rule everyone should sign up for one monthly
assignment or twice for a weekly assignment: (1) to lead either the Welcome,
Singing Time, or Marching Time, or do Clean Up; (2) to do Snack/Story Time. We all
appreciate those who put themselves a little out of their comfort zone to take
a turn leading the activities. Thank you in advance for doing this program with
us. The kids really love it!
When you sign up for Snack/Story Time, it is for one day. We
usually plan for about 15 kids. Sometimes we have extra snacks, and sometimes
we have to share. When you sign up for Welcome, Singing Time, Marching Time, or
Clean Up, it is for all the Wednesdays in that month.
If you can’t/don’t want to come every week during a month,
find a partner that you can trade off with, and put both of your names on the
sign-up for that slot. Two people may also sign-up for Snack/Story Time
together. It’s a flexible program that can work for everyone.
Special Holiday Activities
Some holidays provide an opportunity to do a little something
extra.
Halloween
On the Wednesday before Halloween, the kids do a costume
parade during Marching Time.
Valentine’s Day
On the Wednesday before Valentine’s Day, the kids do a
valentine exchange during Snack/Story Time.
The following pages have
instructions for those that have signed up.
Leading the Welcome
Thank you for signing up to lead our Welcome for the month! This
should be fun and easy. Lots of Moms will be there to help if you get stuck. Remember,
we all take turns, so there’s no reason to feel like you’re on your own. With a
little preparation you can lead a successful Welcome.
To prepare, you’ll want to review the songs and finger plays
under “Welcome” in the Music Makers Songbook section of this manual. We sing
the Welcome songs every week, so everyone is already pretty familiar with them.
Choose 2 finger plays from the songbook, or if you know some
different ones that you like, you can do those. If you are doing some of your
own, please type them up and print out the words and bring them for the days of
your assignment so that everybody can have/share.
The first thing to do at Music Makers is decide when to
start. We want to try to start at 10 am. If it feels a little empty, wait a
bit, but be sure to start by 10:10.
Pick a child to start within the circle that you know, and
that is likely to stay there, so that you can remember where you started. Be
sure to get everyone’s attention, at least the moms, before you begin singing.
You can write this agenda on a note card to keep in your
pocket, if it helps:
- “Welcome
to Music Makers”
- “What
Do We Do When We Come to Music Makers?”
- “La
La Song”
- 2 finger
plays based on the monthly theme. Do them twice to help the kids learn
them better.
- “Open,
Shut Them”
- Turn
the time over for Singing Time.
Thanks for signing up!
Leading Singing Time
Thank you for signing up to lead Singing Time for the month!
This should be fun and nothing to worry about. Lots of Moms will be there to
help if you get stuck. This is a casual class, and we all take turns, so
there’s no reason to feel like you have to know what you’re doing more than
anyone else. With a little preparation you can lead a great Singing Time.
To prepare, you’ll want to look through the songs in the
“Singing Time” section of the Music Makers Songbook and choose 4-5 songs for
the month. The songs are organized according to the monthly theme. Many of the
Moms are already pretty familiar with them. You can also do more songs during
the month by replacing one of the songs each week with a new one. If you have a
song on CD that you’d like everyone to sing along with, play it.
The songs in the songbook are only provided as a help. You
are welcome to use songs that are not in the songbook. If you decide to use
songs that are not in the songbook, please make copies of the songs for use
during Singing Time so that we can sing along at Music Makers and practice with
the children at home.
Keeping the kids attention can be more challenging as we
finish Singing Time. Here are some ideas that might help:
- Have a
bucket that a volunteer can choose something out of representing the next
song.
- Ask
for a volunteer to hold up a picture during a song.
- Have all
the kids do something, like clap, when they hear a certain word in a song.
- Choose
songs that have actions.
- Use a
toy microphone and have the kids take turns singing into it.
During your Singing Time, begin by passing out the songbooks
and the copies for other songs you’ve chosen. We sing most songs once. Short,
fun songs, with only one verse may be sung twice. End by telling everybody that
it’s time for Marching Time.
Thanks for signing up!
Leading Marching Time
Thank you for signing up to lead Marching Time this month!
This should be fun and nothing to stress over. Lots of Moms will be there to
help you get the kids moving. Remember that this is a casual class, and we all
take turns, so there’s no reason to feel like you have to know what you’re
doing more than anyone else. With a little preparation, you can lead a fun and
exciting Marching Time.
To prepare, you’ll want to choose 2-3 movement-type songs or
activities. Here are some ideas:
Hokey Pokey, Ring Around the Rosie,
London Bridges, Do as I’m Doing, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
- Play
songs on CD that you can dance/move to:
Wiggles songs w/actions, Chicken
Dance, children’s songs that give instructions, holiday/educational songs that
you create actions for (ask around for movement ideas), freeze dance (stop the
song in the middle and everybody freezes)
- Play
music while the kids do an activity:
Parachute or bed sheet with balls/toys
bouncing, tunnels to crawl through, blow bubbles, play with ribbons
The Marching Time section of the Music Makers Songbook has
instructions on the songs we do every week and words to some familiar songs to
sing with actions. Generally, you want to keep the activities fairly simple so
that young children can follow along easily (Moving in a giant circle as a
group, waving arms, stomping feet, jumping, turning around, etc). You’ll be the
one to start and stop songs on the CD player unless you ask someone else to do
that for you (the person doing the welcome for the month brings the CD player).
Marching Time follows this pattern:
- “The
Marching Song” (everyone plays along with instruments)
- “See
Me Run” (put away instruments before this song)
- 2-3
movement songs/activities (about 10 minutes worth)
- Send
everyone to Snack & Story Time
Thank you for signing up!
Snack & Story Time
Thank you for signing up for Snack & Story Time! This is
the simplest part of our program. We plan for about 15 kids, although some days
there are more or less. The “Good-Bye Song” can be found at the end of the
songbook.
The snack can be anything you like (we try to avoid nuts).
Some people bring prepackaged snacks (granola bars, fruit snacks, snack size
cookies/crackers). Some people bring a mix of different snacks in baggies or
cups so that each child has something to hold the snacks in (fish
crackers/cookies/pretzels/ jellybeans). We recommend that the snacks be easy to
clean-up (less crumbly, less sticky).
The stories can be favorites of yours or your child’s, can
relate to the monthly theme, or just be great for young children. We recommend
larger size picture books so that everyone can see and shorter stories with not
too many words per page.
Here is the routine:
- Pass
Out Snack (the Year-Long Helpers may have announcements and sign-ups to
pass around at this time)
- 2-3
Short Stories with Pictures (5-10 min.)
- “Good-Bye
Song”
Thank you for signing up!
Clean-Up
Thank you for volunteering to clean up after Music Makers
for the month! It’s a pretty simple job. Here’s what we do:
- Pick
up any garbage off the floor.
- Sweep
the floor with a carpet sweeper if you see crumbs (sweepers are in the custodial
closet just to the right of the riverside library).
- Take
out the garbage to the dumpster (this can be done on your way out)
- Replace
the garbage bag (they can be found in the custodial closet as well).
- Turn
off the lights.
Thanks for signing up!

Gently down the stream.

Life is but a dream.

5 LITTLE ELVES
Five little elves waiting for Christmas day,
The 1st one was fixing the last of the toys.
The 2nd one was checking the list of the girls and boys.
The 3rd one was hooking up the sleigh.
The 4th one just wanted to play.
The 5th one yelled, “It’s Christmas, hurray!”
BABY JESUS
Baby Jesus snuggles in deep,
In warm, but scratchy straw.
On a nearby hillside, shepherds hear
The angels’ song of awe.
They race to Bethlehem
to see
The king born in a stable.
Then kneel before the Son of God,
A manger for His cradle.

Seven little, eight little, nine little reindeer,
Ready too pull Santa’s sleigh.
SILENT NIGHT
Silent Night! Holy Night!
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon virgin, mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in Heavenly peace.
Sleep in Heavenly peace.
JINGLE BELLS
Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go
Laughing all the way.
Bells on Bob’s tail ring,
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!
RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED
REINDEER
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,
Had a very shiny nose,
And if you ever saw it,
You would even say it glowed.
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve,
Santa came to say:
“Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then all the reindeer loved him,
As they shouted out with glee:
“Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,
You’ll go down in history!”
AWAY IN A MANGER
Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the heavens look down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus; Look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle ‘til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.
UP ON THE HOUSETOP
Up on the housetop reindeer pause
Out jumps good old Santa Clause
Down through the chimney with lots of toys
All for the little ones Christmas joys
Chorus:
Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go!
Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn’t go!
Up on the housetop, click, click, click
Down through the chimney with good St. Nick!
First comes the stocking of little Nell
Oh, dear Santa, fill it well.
Give her a dolly that laughs and cries,
One that will open and shut her eyes.
Chorus
SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN
Oh, you better watch out, you better not cry,
You better not pout, I’m telling you why:
Santa Claus is coming to town.
He’s making a list and checking it twice
Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town.
He sees you when you’re sleeping.
He knows when you’re awake.
He knows if you’ve been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake.
Oh, you better watch out, you better not cry,
You better not pout, I’m telling you why:
Santa Claus is coming to town.

A Chubby Little
Snowman
A chubby little snowman
(Hold your arms in a circle to make a fat belly)
Had a carrot nose.
(Point your forefinger out from your nose)
Along came a bunny
(Make a bunny with your fingers, Make it hop)
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny
(Turn palms upward and shrug in disbelief)
Looking for his lunch
(Shade your eyes, as if looking into the distance)
Ate that snowman's carrot nose.
(Make a bunny with one hand and a carrot with the other)
Nibble,
nibble, CRUNCH!
(Clap hands together)
Falling Raindrops
Raindrops, raindrops, falling all around.
Pitter-patter on the rooftops,
Pitter-patter on the ground.
Here is my umbrella,
It will keep me dry;
When I go walking in the rain,
I hold it up so high.
A RAINBOW FAIR
When the rain falls from the sky,
Don’t forget to look up high.
If the sun is shining there,
You may see a rainbow fair.
Red, orange, yellow, green, and blue
And you’ll see there’s purple too.
TRICKERY
The big round sun in the morning sky
Winked at a cloud that was passing by.
The gray cloud laughed as it scattered rain,
Then out came the big round sun again.
WIND TRICKS
The wind is full of tricks today,
It blew our newspaper away.
It chased the trashcan down the street.
It almost blew us off our feet.
It makes the trees and bushes dance.
Just listen to it howl and prance.

POPCORN POPPING
I looked out the window and what did I see?
Popcorn popping on the apricot tree!
Spring has brought me such a nice surprise,
Blossoms popping right before my eyes.
I could take an armful and make a treat,
A popcorn ball that would smell so sweet.
It wasn’t really so, but it seemed to be
Popcorn popping on the apricot tree.

Touch your nose, touch your chin,
That’s the way this game begins.
Touch your eyes, touch your knees,
Now pretend you’re going to sneeze.
Touch your hair, touch one ear,
Touch your two red lips right here.
Touch your elbows where they bend,
That’s the way this touch game ends.

dig
And then I plant
some seeds.

Right there before
my eyes,
My seeds begin to
grow.

And eat, and eat, and eat.

They’re animal crackers that I ate, and none of them are

For ice cream!
LITTLE JACK HORNER
Little Jack Horner sat in a corner,
Eating a mincemeat pie.
He stuck in his thumb and pulled out a plum,
And said, “What a good boy am I!”

ON TOP OF SPAGHETTI
On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled right out the door.
It rolled in the garden,
And under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.
The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be,
And then the next summer,
It grew into a tree.
The tree was all covered,
With beautiful moss,
It grew lovely meatballs
With tomato sauce.
So, if you like spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatballs,
And don’t ever sneeze.

Mama’s little baby loves short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves short’nin’ bread.

Oh, do you know the muffin man,
That lives on Gingerbread Lane?
Oh, yes, I know the muffin man,
The muffin man, the muffin man,

That lives on Gingerbread Lane.
Sing a song of sixpence
Sing a song of
sixpence a pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?
The king was in his
chamber counting all his money,
The queen was in the parlor eating bread and honey
The maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes,
When down came a blackbird who snapped off her nose!
TWO RED APPLES
Tune: This Old Man
Way up high, in a

Two red apples
smiled at me.
So I shook that tree
as har-r-d as I could.
Down came the apples
and Mmmm, they were good.

OH WHAT DO YOU DO IN THE SUMMERTIME?
Oh, what do you do in the summertime, when all the world is
green?
Do you fish in a stream, or lazily dream on the banks as the clouds go by?
Is that what you do? So do I!
Oh, what do you do in the summertime, when all the world is
green?
Do you swim in a pool, to keep yourself cool, or swing in a tree up high?
Is that what you do? So do I!
Oh, what do you do in the summertime, when all the world is
green?
Do you march in parades, or drink lemonades, or count all the stars in the sky?
Is that what you do? So do I!
